Bike Maine with Karen – Day 1

Over the next seven days, Karen Hakala, SVP of Marketing, will be representing Norway Savings Bank and putting in some serious miles on her bike with Bike Maine! 354 miles to be exact! Karen will be sharing updates with us each day so we can all vicariously experience everything that Bike Maine and the coast of Maine have to offer. Be sure to check back each day to read her blog posts and view photos from the day’s events!

The adventure along the Bold Coast has begun! Over the next seven days, I will pedal 354 miles along Maine’s scenic coast.  Norway Savings Bank is a contributing sponsor of Bike Maine, and I am proud to represent NSB as we work with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine to make Maine better through biking and walking.   The fully supported tour includes 400 fellow cyclists from all over the world. Saturday night, before the tour began, we enjoyed a lasagna dinner with entertainment by Maine humorist, Tim Sample.

Our journey began Sunday morning on the Schoodic Byway; a 27-mile driving route, providing access to fishing villages and coastal scenery around the majority of Schoodic Peninsula. The day started off drizzly and foggy but the mood was not dampened because everyone was excited to get started.

The route started in Winter Harbor along the Byway through fishing villages, Prospect Harbor, where the last U.S. sardine cannery operated until closing in 2010; Corea to Gouldsboro then quickly through Milbridge where we headed inland for a little while to Harrington, Addison,  and ending our day of riding back on the water, in Jonesport. We rode the last 24 miles in pouring rain and a strong headwind! Sunday night we enjoyed a live performance by singer Mark Betchold. Monday we head for Machias!
