NSB Contributes $10,000 to Portland Community Squash

PORTLAND—At its core, the sport of squash can be defined as hitting a ball off a wall. But what is happening at Portland Community Squash (PCS) is anything but simple. It is a non-profit community center eliminating barriers for more than 300 families from 30 countries.

“Squash is the hook,” said Barrett Takesian, Executive Director of PCS. “But our programs provide so much more.”

Located on Noyes Street, PCS has united over 700 members of all ages and backgrounds since its inception in 2017. In addition, an acclaimed after-school program offers squash, along with academic assistance and community building, to nearly 200 young people.

“We provide academic support, wellness programs, character development, social events and more,” said Takesian. “We have a van at every school for pick up and drive the students home at the end of the day. Some students spend 25 hours per week here from elementary school through high school graduation.”

Thanks to the contributions of generous donors and local businesses, most families with financial difficulties are able to receive financial aid that enables their children to participate, supporting PCS’ commitment to equity and access for all.

“My family and I have been a part of PCS for five years,” said a ninth grader from Portland. “I love squash, but most of all, the community of friendships I have here.”

Norway Savings Bank is proud to be among the major sponsors of PCS and has donated $10,000 to the organization in 2024.

“To observe the work of the staff and volunteers at Portland Community Squash is to see hundreds and hundreds of local youth being changed for the better. They are learning the skills they need to thrive and gaining an appreciation for the beauty of being part of a community,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “They focus on walking with young people as they move through school and are able to build a relationship with the entire family. It’s making a real difference in the lives of those they are engaging.”

The impact will most certainly continue to grow as PCS is in the middle of a renovation of its existing space and a major expansion to add courts, fitness spaces, a cafe, social spaces, and outdoor amenities.

“We need inclusive spaces in our communities, where neighbors build relationships across lines of difference. We believe that a commitment to access, equity, and integration makes every community stronger,” said Takesian.

“PCS has received regional and national attention for its model,” said Walsh. “The involvement of youth and their families in emphasizing diversity, inclusion, and cohesion is generating hope far beyond the courts on Noyes Street. What a gift.”

The courts are open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, and racquets are even provided. All participants and new visitors need to do is be enthusiastic, open to new experiences, and ready to be inspired, one racquet swing at a time.
