Norway Savings Bank helps bring animal companionship to Maine Veterans
[Norway, ME] – Maine is home to hundreds of deserving non-profit organizations, including the Portland Chapter of Pets for Vets; an organization that matches animal companions to provide emotional and physical support to U.S. Military Veterans returning home from duty.
Pets for Vets rescues animals from shelters, then trains and pairs the pet with a Veteran who could benefit from having a furry friend. With the alarming statistics Veterans face when returning to civilian life after military duty, and the number of animals euthanized each year, the companionship is a blessing for the Vet and the pet.
As part of the 150th Anniversary celebration, Norway Savings Bank held a Facebook drawing for a $1,500 donation to one Maine non-profit and Pets for Vets, Portland, Maine was selected. In late November, Pat Weigel, President & CEO of Norway Savings Bank, along with employees from the Congress Street branch, presented Tom Targett and Judy Moore from Pets for Vets accompanied by their four-legged friends, Brady and Charles. Tom mentioned, with this check, they would likely be able to place another pet with a Maine veteran. There tends to be a waitlist for selection and placement of animals, as it can take approximately six weeks for a dog to be trained and ready to go home with their new companion.
Pets for Vets, is a nationwide program with state chapters. The Portland, Maine chapter serves Portland and the surrounding areas. If you are, or you know a veteran who could benefit from this organization, please contact Pets for Vets Portland, Maine at [email protected] or by phone (207) 415-8423.
