NSB Renews Major Partnership with McLaughlin Garden and Homestead

SOUTH PARIS—Inspired by visits to ornamental gardens in his young adulthood, Bernard McLaughlin broke ground at his family’s South Paris homestead in 1936, choosing unique plants to fill an expansive garden. He invited the public to visit his beautiful space in gratitude for their support and friendship, and that beloved tradition continues nearly a century later at McLaughlin Garden and Homestead.

Now under the stewardship of the McLaughlin Foundation, visitors numbering in the thousands head to Route 26 each year to take in 125 varieties of lilacs, one of the largest collections in New England, on more than 200 trees as well as an impressive array of hostas, daylilies, astibles, irises, phlox, wildflowers, and ferns.

Norway Savings Bank is happy to help preserve this oasis of tranquility and natural beauty, including a recent $2,750 contribution to serve as season sponsor.

“The staff and volunteers pour their hearts into making it a true natural, cultural, and must-see venue for residents and visitors alike,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “We’re honored to play a small part in supporting these dedicated people, the diverse programming, and this unforgettable place.”

Special events and educational workshops are presented to the public, many at no cost.

The much-anticipated season at McLaughlin begins with the Opening Weekend Wildflower Celebration (May 9-10), and includes McLaughlin’s other signature events: the Lilac Festival (May 22-25), Garden Illuminated (August 21-22), and the Jack O’ Lantern Spectacular (October 15-17). Special one-day events also fill the 2026 schedule. In addition, the organization collaborates with Norway Memorial Library to host a summer program for children that includes performances, presentations and music.

“NSB’s contributions support the free and low-cost programming that enriches our community and ensures that the garden and its impact continue to grow and serve our community,” said Leslie Guenther, Director of the McLaughlin Garden and Homestead.

The grounds are open to visitors each day from dawn to dusk from Mother’s Day Weekend (May 9-10) through November 1. The barn and gift shop are open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is always free, but a $10 donation to support the garden and homestead is suggested.
