NSB’s Family Hive Providing Free Summer Financial Literacy for Ages 3-21
NORWAY—According to the National Financial Educators Council, a lack of personal financial knowledge costs an estimated average of $1,400 per individual ($352 billion total) in the U.S. each year, and a study by the National Endowment for Financial Education reported that a vast majority of young adults realize they don’t understand finance and want to learn more.
“Finance and banking can feel overwhelming to people of all ages,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “The earlier we can help people obtain a basic understanding of these concepts and gradually introduce more advanced topics the better.”
In an effort to meet them at any age, Norway Savings Bank is pleased to offer Family Hive, a free, family-focused financial information hub designed to provide financial tips and tools for parents to talk to their children, teens, and young adults about money and other real-life scenarios. The ‘Family Hive’ title is a nod to NSB’s beloved mascot, Barnabee.
The many NSB Family Hive resources are broken up into four categories:
Ages 3-9
To get younger children engaged early with tips on saving, sharing, and spending.
Ages 9-13
To teach how money can grow and the value of a dollar.
Ages 14-17
To help teens save as they spend, particularly as they continue to get more active earning money and show them how to make every dollar they earn go as far as it can.
Ages 18+
To provide young adults with financial tools to help manage their finances whether they are attending college, technical school, or joining the work force or military.
NSB is thrilled to be able to offer Family Hive to the wider community, customers and non-customers, free of charge.
“The resources are so helpful and really assist parents by providing real-life examples of when to effectively present these lessons and how to do it. They can lead to good habits that can last a lifetime,” said Walsh.
In addition, children can visit any NSB branch and pick up a free NSB Family Hive piggy bank to get their saving journey started. Further, NSB will match their first $15 saved in their new piggy bank.
“Building a foundation of financial literacy in toddlers, children, teens, and young adults can start at home with Family Hive,” said Walsh. “Learning about saving and planning is a key to creating and maintaining strong and flourishing communities, and NSB is happy to play a small part in helping families on their way.”
