“Buddy Ball” Breeding Bright Smiles in Auburn
AUBURN—With each exchange of a high five or delighted smile on a young person’s face, the beauty and grace of “Buddy Ball” in Auburn is visible on and around the diamonds of Auburn Suburban Baseball & Softball (ASBS).
“Our ‘Buddy Ball’ program is open to any young person with special needs, including physical or cognitive differences. The division allows for a ‘buddy’ to help the players as needed with hitting, running the bases, and catching the ball,” said Mark Porter, Treasurer of ASBS. “The league is designed so everyone can have fun and participate in America’s favorite pastime.”
The games are held weekly from late April through the end of June, with each player receiving a team hat and personalized jersey.
Norway Savings Bank is proud to be a sponsor of “Buddy Ball” and has also had several team members volunteer their time as “buddies,” including Richelle Wallace, Executive VP and Senior Resources Officer at NSB.
“It is so rewarding, and the kids and families appreciate it so much. It’s really a blast,” said Richelle. “Both the athletes and their ‘buddies’ are amazing to watch. It fills your heart.”
Thanks to community support, there is no registration fee.
“We’re thankful for the support of Norway Savings and our other sponsors who make it possible for our staff and volunteers to provide this beloved program,” said Porter.
“It’s heartwarming to watch these athletes participating in the games, developing a love for baseball, and feeling fulfilled as a member of a team,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “It’s an unforgettable and positive experience for the players and provides heartwarming moments for families and spectators. NSB applauds the efforts of ASLL and is proud to be listed as a sponsor of such a worthy and impactful program.”
