NSB Presents $5,000 Check to Bridgton Historical Society for New Gallery and Exhibit Space

BRIDGTON—At the center of understanding of Bridgton’s past stands a clear path to an exciting future.

The Bridgton Historical Society (BHS) is currently preserving and renovating the United Methodist Church building on Main Street to serve as its new headquarters.

The building, which was dedicated in 1872, will now feature a gallery and exhibit space on the main floor, a museum shop and lobby in the entrance, and areas where educational experiences can be offered. Upgrades are being made to the electrical system, alarm system, and other facility points, but preservation is being held in equal priority as the stained-glass windows that adorn the walls are being stabilized and the building’s clock and bell are being repaired.

“This project is finding a new purpose and writing a new chapter for one of Bridgton’s most historical buildings while providing a new space for BHS to tell the stories of Bridgton residents from settlement through the 21st century,” said Kerry Cushing, Executive Director of BHS. “It’s beautiful.”

To support this major project and the organization’s mission of encouraging an appreciation for the area’s shared history, Norway Savings Bank was pleased to deliver a $5,000 check to representatives from Bridgton Historical Society on February 3 (picture, caption below).

“I’m continually amazed at the important work Bridgton Historical Society does in collecting, interpreting, and presenting historically significant material that celebrates and promotes the indelible moments and traditions of the area,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “We’re thankful for the contributions they make and the many ways in which they ensure public access through programs, publications, and exhibitions.”

“This donation from Norway Savings Bank makes a difference in what we can accomplish and helps fulfill our mission to protect and preserve the history of Bridgton,” said Cushing. “Community involvement and support enables us to build an even stronger organization.”

Currently, BHS maintains a museum and archives at the old firehouse on Gibbs Avenue and oversees Narramissic, the Peabody-Fitch Farm in South Bridgton which was built in 1797, with the new center currently being completed in the church building becoming a base of operations later this year.
