NSB Continues Support of Amjambo Africa and Upcoming Enhancements
PORTLAND—Since its inception over eight years ago, Amjambo Africa has served as an important source for news, cultural information, and a feeling of connection to new Mainers.
The non-profit print newspaper and website are parts of the Ladder to the Moon Network, a Portland-based organization that advocates for the well-being of immigrants, educates the public about immigration, and fosters community integration through events and programs. News and information are offered in seven different languages: English, French, Spanish, Somali, Kiswahili, Portuguese, and Ikinyarwanda.
In support of this conduit of resources for Maine newcomers and its mission of helping Mainers understand why newcomers arrive in the state, Norway Savings Bank was pleased to continue its support of the work with a recent $1,000 donation. The contribution is part of the NewsMatch campaign, a nationally celebrated fundraising window for nonprofit news that will begin on November 1.
“NSB’s gifts build the civic media that guides vulnerable Mainers through changing times,” said Leah Hargrove, Executive Director of the Ladder to the Moon Network. “We’re deeply grateful for the bank’s appreciation of our efforts to connect people with good information, reliable resources, and trustworthy guidance.”
In the coming months, the organization will grow in impact and reach with a renewed focus as a two-way, community-driven vehicle.
“We’re changing our name from Amjambo Africa to Amjambo News, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity for all new Mainer communities,” said Hargrove. “We’ll cover the same critical issues, but with a name that invites people of many backgrounds to see themselves reflected in what we publish.”
In addition, Amjambo News will be organizing circle gatherings to aid in the news processing process within communities, holding news-based ELL programs to encourage literacy for working professionals, and offering additional channels to build understanding among viewers.
“We’re grateful for this amazing work and the ways in which it is both welcoming new neighbors and assisting them,” said Darci Hamm, President of NSB. “This publication and its access to resources provide help and hope, and NSB is proud to play a small role in helping sustain the positive impact this organization makes throughout Maine.”
