What is a chip card?
Chip-enabled cards have an embedded microchip that stores your account information. The microchip is safer than traditional magnetic stripe cards because they use one-time codes to complete your transaction when used for card-present (in-store) transactions. The chip makes it more difficult for fraudsters to “skim” your information from a magnetic stripe reader and create counterfeit cards using your information. Chip cards have been in use in over 130 countries and are proven to reduce the rate of fraud.
Where can I use my chip card?
You can use your chip card at any retailer that accepts MasterCard. Many countries around the world have adopted chip card technology – banks and retailers are working to make this technology standard in the US as well.
What if the retailer’s card reader is not chip enabled?
Your new chip card will still have a magnetic stripe on the back, so you can still swipe your card to complete your transaction.
How does the chip card work for online and telephone transactions?
Your chip card will work the same for online and telephone transactions as your magnetic stripe card does today.
Does the chip prevent my information from being stolen?
While the chip does provide an additional layer of security, it does not completely prevent the possibility of fraud. We provide a 24/7 fraud monitoring system and monitor every transaction for fraudulent activity and we encourage you to monitor your accounts closely and report any unauthorized transactions immediately. It is also important to remember that your debit card is covered by MasterCard’s Zero Liability protection policy should you have unauthorized activity on your account. We offer many options to help you monitor your accounts, such as Internet Banking, Mobile Solutions, TeleBanker, and CardValet®.
What information is stored on the chip?
The chip stores your debit card number and expiration date – the information needed to complete your transaction.
How do I use my chip card at a retailer?
Swipe your card as you normally would. If the retailer’s card reader terminal is chip-enabled, the screen will display instructions to insert your card into the slot at the front of the terminal.
- Insert the card face up, with the chip end first.
- Leave your card inserted in the terminal during the entire transaction.
- When prompted, sign your name or enter your PIN.
- Remove your card and take your receipt.
How do I use my chip card at an ATM?
Insert your card as you normally would. If the ATM is chip-enabled, you may be asked to reinsert your card and leave it inserted until the transaction has been completed. Be sure to remove your card from the ATM when you are finished.
