NSB Donates $1,000 to Hewnoaks Artist Residency in Lovell

LOVELL—“My time at Hewnoaks shifted my entire perspective of myself as an artist. Before, I thought of myself as a person who did art. Now, I wear the title of artist with pride. The mixture of gorgeous landscape, almost solitude, and very little societal distractions is the perfect combo for creativity to flow.”

The words of artist Hannah Hansen echo the experience of the creative and curious individuals who head to Hewnoaks Artist Residency for an immersive experience on 25 undisturbed acres on the eastern shore of Kezar Lake.

For over a century, the peaceful surroundings have provided an extraordinary setting of inspiration and beauty for artists from around the world.

Hewnoaks, which formalized as a nonprofit in 2013, is funded by grants, donations, and contributions from organizations and people that appreciate its mission and meaning. Norway Savings Bank has been a longtime supporter of the endeavor, including a recent $1,000 donation.

“Hewnoaks encourages emerging and mid-career artists who benefit from the time and space away from their daily lives to create and grow,” said Dan Walsh, President and CEO of Norway Savings. “NSB is humbled and honored to be able to assist such an historic venue and the incredible work it inspires.”

Hewnoaks features Rambling Timbers, the main lodge, which serves as a common space for artists to convene and share, and five individual cabins named Sans Souci, Viking Court, Pine Clad, Alpine Hut, and Charming Retreat. All offer expansive lake views and serenity. Everyone is welcome to apply for residency, with Maine artists given preference.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for Norway Savings Bank’s steadfast support of our programming,” said Beth Given-Sorensen, Executive Director of Hewnoaks. “They have also been foundational to the growth of our signature public event, Wild Light, helping us transform it from a small gathering into one of Oxford County’s premier summer arts events drawing hundreds of guests.”

All are welcome at the 2026 Wild Light, set for August 22, which features a public art exhibition that will include ten primarily Maine-based artists working across visual arts, performance, and music, offering engagement with the environment and spirit of Hewnoaks. It’s a free, family-friendly event with refreshments and artwork for sale. More details will be announced in the coming months and you can follow along on the Hewnoaks’ Instagram and Facebook pages.
