our car buying tips
take it slow
Don’t buy a car when you’re in a hurry. Set aside the time and do it right.
research
Head online for comprehensive pricing, rebates, and other key information.
set limits
Before you visit car dealers, use our How Much Car Can I Afford calculator to determine monthly payments for different sizes of auto loans. This will help you figure out what you can spend on your car.
price vs. payments
Set a budget for the price of the car and the total payment. It is a mistake to extend the loan beyond the life of a car just so you can afford the monthly payments on a car that is higher priced than your budget will allow.
test drive
Test a variety of cars (for at least 20 minutes each) in a variety of road conditions. Which ones do you like? Trust your instincts. If you don’t like one right off, it probably isn’t going to grow on you.
narrow it down
Before buying, narrow down your choices to one or two makes or models that fit your budget and preferences.
need a loan?
Norway Savings offers a range of value-added Auto Loans that can help you get the most of your hard-earned money.
check the numbers
When all the numbers are in, see if the car fits your total budget. Then take control by negotiating up from the dealer’s invoice cost (see www.edmunds.com or other pricing guides), not down from the asking price.
relax
Be pleasant but firm. And be prepared to walk away if necessary. There’s always another car around the corner.
close the deal
Once you find the perfect car that fits your means, close the deal. Then drive home with a smile on your face!
